2014 Aaliyah Majid winnerKarate Grand Champions Rochdale6 MEMBERS OF The DOJO Karate Centre returned from the Martial Arts Unity Games held on Coventry on SUN 19th OCT with honors. Unity Games is an American Style Martial Arts compeition that attracted a very high standard of performance among Novice to Elite level divisions. Winners of each division then progress through to ‘Play-offs’ and then onto the ‘Grand-final’ for each age category competing against the multi-disciplined arts. The Grand-final winners get huge trophies and money for their efforts. The DOJO Squad was under represented due to everyone preparing for the World Champs the following week. However a handful of athletes who entered all performed excellently. Its was Faris Aslam’s first competition and he was placed 3rd in the -11yrs Novice Traditional Forms. Aaliyah Majid came 3rd in the 13-15yrs Girls Brown Belt division. Returning to Competition after a break to focus on and achieve their Black Belts, sisters Anna and Jennifer both performed well. Jennifer was 1st in -12yrs Girls Black Belt Kata, 2nd in Weapons Kata and 2nd in Pairs Kata with Anna. Anna was 1st in 13-15yrs Girls Weapons Kata. Jack was 1st in 15-175yrs Mixed Kata and 1st in 15-17yrs Mixed Weapons Kata. Oliver was 1st in Mens -30yrs Kata and 1st in +30yrs Kata. The Winners, Anna, Jack and Oliver then progress onto the Play-offs and qualified for the Grand-Finals night show. There were only 6 Grand Final trophies with 4 of the best winners from each different division competing against each other for the Grand Champion title.

It was the first time experience of this kind for any of the The DOJO members. With a brightly lit stage with over 200 spectators and camera rolling, The DOJO members rose to the occasion very well. Anna was positioned 3rd, while Jack Jolliffe was crowned the 15-17yrs Grand-Champion after convincingly winning against 3 exceptional and older elite athletes from around the country. The Oliver stepped up to the mark to win, also against 3 other high level athletes. The DOJO Members can hold their head high in knowing that from the 9 that entered the Unity Games, we returned with 2 of the 6 Grand Champion titles, 5 1st place divisions, 4 2nd places and only 2 3rd places. 11 in all.
